The secret of Aoharu-style moisturizing ~Lotion & Milky Lotion~
We will be sharing this with Midori Okada (aka Dori-nee), a master nurse who is passionate about spreading the word about proper skin care!
How to properly use lotion and milk
The most basic of skin care basics is "moisturizing" . There are many skin problems such as blemishes, wrinkles, and sagging, but it is important to first properly prepare the "foundation" of the skin by moisturizing. Special care such as whitening and wrinkle improvement will not be fully effective unless the foundation is in place!
The basics of moisturizing are lotion and milky lotion. Most people would say, "I use those two products like I breathe," but because they are essential items that we use every day, if you use them incorrectly, you may not be moisturizing even if you think you are. Lack of moisture in the skin accelerates aging not only on the surface of the skin but also inside the skin, accelerating the progression of wrinkles and sagging.
Many people realize that their skin has changed dramatically just by reviewing how they use lotion and emulsion correctly. Not only women, but men too can see a big change in their skin by using lotion and emulsion correctly! Let's review how to use them correctly and lay the foundation for beautiful skin.
1. How to apply lotion
In the Aoharu method, we recommend applying lotion with your hands, not with cotton . The reason is that rubbing or tapping hard with cotton to make the lotion penetrate the skin causes friction. As we have written many times before, friction is the skin's greatest enemy. Friction can cause blemishes, dullness, redness, and more.
For those who still want to use cotton, you can soak the cotton with plenty of lotion and use it until it is completely soaked, which will reduce friction. However, if you use the lotion until it is completely soaked, it will run out quickly and it will be a waste of money. For that reason, we recommend applying it with your hands.
A good rule of thumb is to use about the size of a 500 yen coin. Take some lotion in one hand, warm it up with both hands, and then use the entire palm of your hand to gently apply the lotion to your face. After gently applying the lotion to large areas such as your cheeks, forehead, and chin, gently press the pads of your fingers into smaller areas such as around your nose, temples, eyes, and mouth, making sure to apply the lotion to your entire face. Finally, don't forget to press under your chin and up to your neck!
Recently, it is also common to see sheet masks (face masks) soaked in lotion. Be sure to leave the sheet mask on your face for the specified time indicated on the packaging. The longer you leave it on, the more the lotion will not penetrate deeper into your skin. If you leave it on for a long time in an attempt to make it penetrate deeper, the stratum corneum will soften and dry up instead. It's the same as when wet newspaper dries, and all the moisture dries up and it becomes crispy. Your efforts to moisturize your skin will end up having the opposite effect, so be sure to keep to the time.
When the specified time is up, gently rub the sheet over your hands to warm it up a little, then remove it. Don't rub the sheet hard on your skin or pat it hard to make it blend in better! If there's still a lot of lotion left on the sheet and you feel like it would be a waste, try using it on your neck, arms, legs, etc.
2. How to apply lotion
Milk lotion acts as a seal to prevent the moisture and moisturizing ingredients that are given to the skin by lotion from escaping. For this reason, we recommend that people with oily skin and men use it, even if only in small amounts .
The amount depends on the condition of your skin, but for women who are concerned about dryness, use 2 to 3 pumps (for Aoharu Resilience Drop Emulsion), about the size of a 1 yen coin, and for men and those with oily skin, use a smaller amount, just 1 pump. Add or remove the amount according to your skin condition. Take the emulsion in one hand and spread it evenly on both hands, then use the entire palm of your hand to wrap around your face and blend it in. As with lotion, after blending into large areas, use the pads of your fingers to blend into smaller areas such as around the nose and temples, making sure to spread it evenly over the entire skin, even if it's just a thin layer.
In particular , areas that tend to dry out, such as around the eyes and mouth, should be treated with care, being sure to place the product firmly on the skin with the pads of your fingers . The reason that areas around the eyes and mouth tend to dry out easily is because they have fewer sebaceous glands that secrete sebum. Sebaceous glands create a sebum film that coats the surface of the skin, acting as a barrier to prevent moisture from evaporating, but areas with fewer sebaceous glands cannot do this, so they have weaker moisturizing power and are more prone to dryness.
Since the tissues of the face are different, it is a good idea to vary the amount you apply to different parts. Apply more to the areas around the eyes and mouth, which have fewer sebaceous glands and tend to have a thinner sebum film, to cover their naturally weak moisturizing ability.

Tips on how to apply Aoharu-style lotion and milky lotion
◉Friction is the enemy of beautiful skin. Instead of using cotton, use your hands to wrap the skin around the skin.
◉ Use sheet masks for the recommended time. Leaving them on for too long can have the opposite effect!
◉ Use a small amount of lotion, even if you have oily skin or are a man. Focus on placing it on areas that tend to dry out.
3. How to choose lotion and emulsion
Since lotion and milky lotion are basic skin care items, there are many products on the market, and the ingredients and expected effects vary. It's only natural that you might have trouble deciding which one is best.
As a dermatologist, I would like to recommend products that contain the skin's natural moisturizing ingredients. For example, hyaluronic acid and ceramides that keep the skin moist, collagen that supports the skin's elasticity, and squalane, an oil component found in sebum. As I mentioned at the beginning, the main purpose of using lotion and milk is to moisturize, which is the most basic of skin care basics. The skin's moisturizing ingredients are lost due to dry air and aging, so I would like you to first prioritize providing the skin with the ingredients it naturally has and preparing the foundation for the skin .
In addition, ingredients that are naturally contained in the skin can be used safely even by people with sensitive skin. If lotions and milky lotions contain ingredients other than those naturally contained in the skin, such as ingredients that are expected to have a whitening effect, people with sensitive skin may not be able to use them. Be sure to try a sample or tester first before purchasing. If you feel itching or a tingling sensation when using the product, it is a sign of minor inflammation, so do not use it.
Also, the moisturizing effect of lotion and milky lotion increases in proportion to the amount used. If you are using a lotion and milky lotion thoroughly but still feel dry, first try increasing the amount you use. If the dryness does not improve even after increasing the amount, it means that the lotion or milky lotion you are using is not moisturizing enough. Switch to a lotion or milky lotion with stronger moisturizing power, or add a moisturizing cream.
4. How often to use moisturizing care and how to make it a habit
Moisturizing care with lotion and milk is necessary twice a day . Many women are in the habit of moisturizing after washing their face in the morning and after cleansing when they get home. Similarly, men should also get into the habit of moisturizing twice a day, rather than just in the morning or after a bath. Make it a habit to moisturize not only your face, but also your neck and the backs of your hands, which tend to dry out easily. Many men will not continue with complicated care, so just use lotion and milk, and make sure you "continue"! Making it a habit will change your skin.
Women, too, may be restricted from going out due to the COVID-19 pandemic or poor health, or may refrain from going out due to the extreme heat, and there may be days when you don't step outside even after washing your face in the morning, and you don't even put on light makeup or sunscreen. On such days, you may skip washing your face and moisturizing in the evening. However, this puts a lot of strain on your skin!!!
Even if you don't go outside at all, your skin will secrete sebum during the day, which will oxidize over time. Oxidized sebum will damage your skin. If you go to sleep with this poor quality sebum still on your skin, not only will you waste the time you spend sleeping at night (known as the golden time) when your metabolism is activated and your skin should be beautiful, but you will also be putting a strain on your skin!
No matter what your day is like, make it a habit to wash or cleanse your face at night to remove impurities and moisturize before going to bed.
